Wholesale Backpacks Buying Guide: Materials, Sizes, and MOQs Explained
Backpacks look simple on a catalogue page, but wholesale backpacks succeed or fail on details a photo cannot show: fabric weight, zip quality, how the laptop sleeve is padded, whether the back panel holds its shape. This guide breaks down what to check when you source from a bulk backpacks supplier — by use case, material, size and order terms — so the range you buy matches the customers you sell to.
Start with the use case
The four mainstream segments behave differently, and a mixed order usually covers more than one:
- School backpacks — the volume segment. Buyers care about capacity (books, folders, a lunch box), bright colours and a price that survives a school season. Reinforced bottoms and strong shoulder-strap stitching matter more than styling details.
- Travel backpacks — larger capacity (25–40 litres), often with a separate shoe or wet compartment, compression straps and sometimes expandable volume. Weight matters because travellers carry them for hours.
- Laptop backpacks — a padded sleeve sized to the device (15.6 inch is the standard reference), a structured back panel and a more restrained colour range. Corporate and promotional buyers sit in this segment too.
- Commuter and casual daypacks — smaller (15–20 litres), lighter fabrics, simpler construction; the commuter segment overlaps heavily with laptop models.
Decide your segment mix first. It drives every later decision on material, size and price point.
Materials: Oxford fabric, nylon and PU compared
Most wholesale backpacks are built from one of three shell materials:
- Oxford fabric (polyester) — the workhorse of school and promotional backpacks. It is inexpensive, takes colour well, holds a printed logo cleanly and resists everyday scuffs. Its limits: it feels less refined, and thin grades can look flat. Check the density (for example 600D versus 300D) rather than accepting "Oxford" as a full specification.
- Nylon — lighter and stronger for its weight, with a smoother hand feel and better abrasion resistance. It is the natural choice for travel and laptop backpacks, and it costs more than polyester Oxford. Water-repellent coatings are common on nylon shells.
- PU (polyurethane-coated fabric and PU leather) — used where the look matters: fashion mini backpacks, women's backpack styles and products that imitate a leather finish. PU gives a smooth surface and wipes clean, but it is less breathable, can stiffen in cold weather, and heavy grades add weight.
Whichever material you choose, ask about the parts buyers actually return products over: zip brand and gauge, buckle plastic quality, strap webbing width, and whether stress points (strap roots, handle, bottom corners) are bar-tack stitched.
Sizes, capacity and compartments
Backpack sizing is usually given as external dimensions plus a litre estimate. Treat the litre figure as a guide, not a standard — two 25-litre claims can hold different amounts depending on shape. More useful checks:
- Laptop sleeve size — stated in inches of screen diagonal, and whether the sleeve is suspended (raised off the base) for drop protection
- Main compartment opening — full U-zip panels load like a suitcase; top-loaders are simpler and cheaper
- Organisation — front pockets, pen slots, a key clip, side bottle pockets; each added compartment adds sewing time and therefore cost
- Back panel and straps — foam padding, mesh ventilation and strap width decide comfort on anything over 20 litres
For school ranges, confirm the bag fits A4 folders with room to spare; for travel ranges, confirm cabin-size limits of the airlines your market uses.
MOQ, mixed colours and how ordering works
Factory minimums for backpacks are normally set per style, not per colour. At Bagevo the minimum is 100 pieces per style, and colours can be mixed inside that quantity — you might take a school backpack in four colours at 25 pieces each, for example. This matters at range-planning stage: it lets you test more colourways without multiplying your minimum order.
If you want your own logo on a stock style, the minimum rises (500 pieces per style at our factory, with the logo itself free of charge), and fully customised styles start from 1,000 pieces. Stock styles ship in 7–15 days; logo orders take 20–25 days.
What actually moves the price
When two backpacks look alike but quote differently, the gap is usually in one of these:
- Fabric grade and coating — density, backing and water-repellent treatment
- Size and panel count — bigger bags use more material and more sewing operations
- Hardware — zips, buckles, D-rings and adjusters vary widely in cost
- Padding and structure — foam thickness, PE board inserts, padded straps
- Quantity tier — at our factory, unit prices step down at 500 and again at 1,000 pieces per style
- Logo method — a one-colour print is simple; embroidery, embossing and metal badges each carry different setup and unit costs
Ask any bulk backpacks supplier to quote the same style at two tiers and in two fabric grades. The spread tells you more about their pricing honesty than the headline number.
